JRA Coffee Grind Challenge: Grountain Biking!
December 14 @ 7:00 am - 4:00 pm
This is the last JRA Coffee Grind Challenge for 2019 so we decided to make it epic and all inclusive at the same time! We accomplished this by having short and long routes for stages #1 and #2. Stage #3 has only one route option. The important thing to remember is it’s an adventure ride, not a race. We wanted to get the official word out now. The link for registration will be active soon! A portion of the registration fee will be donated to the Santa Monica Mountains Recovery Fund to help repair the damage caused by the fires.
This Coffee Grinder Challenge has three stages comprised of a “gravel” route, a “mountain” route, and then finishing with a “gravel” route; hence the name “Grountain Biking”. The catch is you MUST use a gravel bike on stages #1 and #3, and a mountain bike on stage #2. Ask any of the past participants and they’ll tell you how much fun and challenging it was to switch bikes between each stage.
Don’t have an appropriate bike? Contact us asap to reserve a bike from our demo fleet at no charge! The bikes are first come first serve and we have a limited number of sizes and models.
The JRA Bikes & Brew parking lot is the staging area for the start, transitions between each stage, and the finish. We’ll have EZ Up tents, chairs, nutrition, beverages, vendor booths, music, and even post-ride recovery massage!
Your morning begins at 7:00am at JRA Bikes & Brew where you’ll finalize the registration process and can grab any last minute items you might need for the journey.
Stage #1 starts on gravel bikes. Riders can choose one of two route options. Option #1 is 18.5 miles long. Option #2 is 24 miles long. Each route loops back to JRA Bikes & Brew where riders can refuel and will grab their mountain bikes for Stage #2.
Stage #2 also has two options to choose from. Option #1 is 11.8 miles long. Option #2 is 35.8 miles long. Each route loops back again to the parking lot where riders can refuel and jump back on their gravel bikes for the final stage.
Stage #3 is only 10.7 miles long but what it lacks in distance it makes up for in steep climbs on the trails. The final 4 miles is an easy spin on paved roads back to the shop parking lot where the BBQ awaits! IMPORTANT: we will have a cut off time for Stage #3 to make sure nobody is out after dark. ie nobody goes out after a specific time.
Strava links for each stage will be coming soon! We recommend uploading them on your GPS device or save the links on your smart phone.
Like all of our events, this is designed to be challenging, but will be fully supported by JRA Bikes & Brew and Crazy Bear Bikes so that you can push your limits while we have your back. Once you’ve finished, you get to enjoy an awesome “backyard” BBQ provided by SRAM and a great post-ride raffle! Trust us when we say this will be the best Coffee Grinder Challenge yet!

Don’t want to ride but want to volunteer? Awesome! Send us a Facebook Message with your contact info. Volunteers get a free T-shirt and lunch at the BBQ!
This is a cardio-vascular demanding ride with technical trails and steep climbs and descents. You are required to obey all traffic laws when riding on the road and rules when out on the trails. You must come prepared with a bike in good working condition, water, a helmet, as well as any protective gear you deem necessary. Do NOT wait until the day of the event to repair or adjust anything on your bike. You should bring an extra innertube, inflation device, and a chain quick-link.
We strongly recommend that you have good bike handling skills and appropriate fitness for the ride distance. Bicycling has its inherent risks, including serious injury or death. Your participation is an acknowledgment of those risks and an assumption of liability.
